Too Much Vitamin D (Vitamin D Toxicity)

What is vitamin D toxicity?

Vitamin D toxicity is potentially serious condition that occurs when excessive amounts of vitamin D build up in the body. It is also known as hypervitaminosis D.

What causes vitamin D toxicity?

Vitamin D toxicity can be caused by taking large doses of vitamin D supplements.

It is unlikely to result from eating the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D, for example fatty fish and egg yolks. Even products with added vitamin D, such as cow’s milk, typically don’t have large amounts of vitamin D in them.

What are the effects of vitamin D toxicity?

One of the concerns of vitamin D toxicity is the build of calcium in the blood (hypercalcaemia). This can cause upset stomach and vomiting, frequent urination and weakness. It can also result in bone pain and kidney problems like kidney stones.

What is the treatment for vitamin D toxicity?

Treatment for vitamin D toxicity includes stopping using vitamin D supplements.

In some cases, intravenous fluids may be required to maintain hydration.

Doctors may also prescribe medications, such as corticosteroids or bisphosphonates, to help reduce calcium levels in the blood.
