Rhinoplasty for Bulbous Nose Tip

A bulbous nose has a rounded, enlarged appearance and may have a prominent nasal tip.

What is a Bulbous Nose?

A bulbous nose is rounded and large, and may have a prominent tip. In some people, this can make them feel their nose appears less balanced in relation to the rest of the face.

Rhinoplasty surgery is an option available for suitable patients to address a bulbous nose or bulbous nose tip. This surgical procedure results in a permanent alteration to the nose structure.

Can You Treat a Bulbous Nose?

A bulbous nose may be treatable, the most appropriate treatment can depend on the individual and the cause of the bulbous appearance.

Treatment options for a bulbous nose may include:

Surgical Rhinoplasty

For people with a bulbous nose caused by genetics or structural factors, rhinoplasty surgery may be a suitable treatment option. Surgical rhinoplasty (sometimes referred to as “a nose job”) permanently changes the structure of the nose. This surgical approach can be used to adjust the nose’s size and shape, helping to create a more balanced facial appearance.

There are different types of rhinoplasty which can be discussed in more detail during a consultation.

Rhino-Tip Surgery

Rhino-tip surgery may be a suitable option where the only concern is the shape of the tip of the nose. The focus of this procedure is lifting and reshaping the tip of the nose.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Non-surgical rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as “liquid rhinoplasty” is a treatment that involves injecting dermal filler to help change the shape and appearance of the nose. Results are not permanent, and repeat appointments are typically required every 6 months – 12 months to maintain the results.

A non-surgical rhinoplasty may also help to provide an indication as to how a surgical rhinoplasty could look.

Rhinophyma Treatment

A dermatologist may prescribe medication to control and treat rosacea for people with rhinophyma. In cases where rhinophyma is more developed, microdermabrasion or laser treatment may be used to reduce excess swollen skin.

What is Bulbous Nose Rhinoplasty?

Bulbous nose rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is a procedure that changes the size of the nose helping to create a slimmer shape.

Nose surgery for a bulbous nose tip typically involves reshaping the nose using cartilage grafts to provide additional structural support. The cartilage grafts may be taken from the body or face.

The surgical procedure typically takes around 3-4 hours, and is performed under general anaesthetic

In terms of recovery, a rhinoplasty for a bulbous nose tip may take around 8 weeks to heal. The final shape of the nose may settle within 6 months. Importantly this can vary between individuals.

Where a bulbous nose is caused by rhinophyma, specialist rhinophyma removal surgery may be required. Excess tissue can be removed by excision and the remaining tissue is reshaped. Laser treatment or dermabrasion may be combined with excision. Ongoing rosacea treatment may be required to maintain results and help prevent the rhinophyma from returning.

Benefits of Bulbous Nose Surgery

Where surgery is suitable, it may offer a number of benefits:

  1. A More Balanced Facial Appearance. Where a bulbous nose causes an unbalanced appearance of the face, nose surgery may help create a more balanced look and make the nose appear less prominent.
  2. Enhanced Confidence. In situations when a bulbous nose impacts confidence, tailored nose surgery may improve one’s confidence.

What Causes a Bulbous Nose?

There are several possible causes of a bulbous nose or a bulbous nasal tip.

Genetics – Some may be more likely to have a bulbous nose if other members of their family have a similar nose shape.

Cartilage and Tissue Structure – The overall shape of the nose can be influenced by the shape and position of soft tissue and cartilage that make up the nose. If these structures are thick or wide in particular areas, including the nasal tip, this can impact appearance.

Rhinophyma – Rhinophyma is a symptom associated with severe cases of rosacea. Thickening of the skin at the end of the nose, and it becoming red, results in a bulbous swollen appearance.

The most appropriate treatment for a bulbous nose may depend on the cause. For those with a bulbous nose because of the structure of the tissue, bulbous nose rhinoplasty surgery may be an appropriate approach. For people suffering from rosacea with rhinophyma, treating the underlying condition before surgery may be suitable.
