Is Septoplasty Surgery Right For Me?
Septoplasty can be helpful and effective for the most suitable candidate – but it isn’t right for everyone.
You May Be a Good Candidate If You:
- Feel nasal obstruction affects sleep, exercise, or daily comfort
Have been told you have a deviated septum following examination
- Notice breathing difficulties that persist despite medical treatments
It May Not Be Right If You:
Symptoms are mild or respond well to non-surgical treatments
Nasal symptoms are caused by inflammation rather than septal deviation
- There are medical reasons why surgery would not be advisable

How septoplasty is performed?
Septoplasty is carried out under general anaesthetic, meaning you are asleep throughout the procedure.
1. Accessing the septum
Incisions are made inside the nose to access the septum.
2. Septal correction
The deviated portions of cartilage or bone are carefully adjusted, repositioned, or reduced to improve airflow.
3. Stabilisation
The septum is supported in its new position. In some cases, small internal splints may be used temporarily.
4. Completion
The incisions are closed using absorbable sutures.
The exact technique and steps may vary depending on individual anatomy and surgical findings.
Will I be awake during septoplasty surgery?
Septoplasty is performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you are asleep for the duration of the surgery.
A specialist anaesthetist is present throughout to administer the anaesthetic and monitor your condition while the procedure is carried out.
What Is Septoplasty (Deviated Septum Surgery)?
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve breathing through the nose by correcting the nasal septum.
The septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two nasal passages. A deviated septum can restrict airflow and cause ongoing nasal blockage, breathing difficulties, and/or poor sleep.
The aim of septoplasty to improve nasal airflow. Septoplasty is carried out internally through the nostrils, meaning there are no visible external scars.

Recovery & Aftercare
After septoplasty, a period of rest is usually recommended
to allow the nose to heal. Many people choose to take some time away from
work during the early recovery phase, often around one to two weeks,
although this can vary depending on individual circumstances.
As swelling settles, breathing through the nose typically
begins to feel more clear, but healing continues gradually over time. It may
take several weeks for nasal airflow to stabilise, with internal
swelling sometimes taking a few months to fully resolve.
When leaving the surgical facility, dressings or internal
supports may be in place. Breathing through the nose can feel restricted at
first due to swelling, but this usually improves as recovery progresses.
Your surgeon will provide specific aftercare advice
and a personalised recovery plan to support safe healing and the best possible
functional outcome.
