Is Rhinoplasty Surgery Right For Me?

Rhinoplasty can be highly effective procedure for the most suitable candidate – but it isn’t right for everyone.

You May Be a Good Candidate If You:

  • Concerned about the shape of your nose

  • Feel your nose is out of proportion

  • Want a natural-looking enhancement that brings your facial features into better balance

It May Not Be Right If You:

  • Would benefit more from non-surgical or alternative treatments

  • Have unrealistic expectations relating to results and recovery

There are different types of surgeries to the nose:

  1. Closed rhinoplasty – Incisions are made inside the nostrils, called “marginal incisions”. It is through these incisions that alterations are made to the shape of the nose. In this technique, there is no visible scarring on the outside of the nose.

  2. Open rhinoplasty – An incision is made across the bridge that connects the two nostrils at the bottom of the nose (the columella). This allows the skin to be lifted. There may be a scar from this incision on the underside of the nose. This approach allows the surgeon to examine the anatomy of the nose in more detail.

  3. Septorhinoplasty – This technique can be used to correct deviation of the septum. The septum is the structure that divides the nose into the left and right halves.

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you are asleep for the duration of the surgery.

A specialist anaesthetist is present throughout to administer the anaesthetic and monitor your condition while the procedure is carried out.

Procedure Details

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a well-known surgical procedure, often referred to as a “nose job”, and involves reshaping the nose by altering its size and/or shape.

The procedure can be performed for both men and women. It is typically carried out under general anaesthetic, meaning you are fully asleep during the operation and do not feel or remember the surgery itself.

An anaesthetist is present throughout to monitor breathing, heart rate, and other vital functions while the surgeon performs the procedure.

Rhinoplasty usually involves working with the underlying bone, cartilage, and soft tissue of the nose. These structures provide the nose with its framework, so changes made at this level are generally intended to be long-lasting.

Recovery & Aftercare

After surgery, a period of rest is required to allow the nose to heal. Many people take time away from work during the early recovery phase, commonly around two weeks, although this can vary depending individual circumstances.

To see full effects of your nose surgery, it can take approximately 3-4 months, while residual swelling may persist for 6 months.

When leaving the surgical facility, dressings are typically in place on the nose and a splint is often applied to support the nasal structure. It may feel difficult to breathe through the nose at first due to swelling and post-op dressing.

Your surgeon will give you advice regarding specific aftercare pointers and a tailored plan for you.

Risks & Honest Considerations

As with all surgery, rhinoplasty carries risks, including:

  • Bruising and swelling around the eyes and nose.
  • Light nosebleed
  • Increased sensation
  • Infection or delayed healing
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetry
Your surgeon will discuss relevant risks with you before you go ahead with the procedure ensuring that you are able to make an informed decision.
